The Olympic athletes in London were not the only ones vying for medals this summer.  On August 27, 2012, Clematis PRINCESS KATE (how appropriate is that name!) had the distinction of not only being one of the four gold medalist winners at the 2012 Plantarium in Boskoop, the Netherlands, it had the additional honor of receiving the “Best New Plant Award”.  In the news release Clematis 'Princess Kate' wins at Plantarium you will find the following: “According to the jury, ‘Princess Kate’ really stands out from the crowd thanks to its unique colour combination, abundant upright flowers and a well sounding brand name.”

Congratulations are in order for the continued innovative clematis breeding that is been done at J. van Zoest Nursery.  Needless to say, it does my heart good to know that this pretty, tulip-shaped clematis in the Texensis Group has been bestowed with these two prestigious trade show awards.  It is doubly rewarding knowing that renowned clematarian, Wim Snoeijer, who is a breeder at the nursery and has been an inspiration to me, no doubt shares my excitement as well.  As you can see from the above pictures it is gorgeous.  I’m sure I am not alone in wanting to grow it, but sadly at this point in time no American nurseries are offering it.  So, I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will see it being offered here next year.
